Avignon is a medieval city that sits on the banks of the Rhône River.  It is known as the City of Popes because the seat of the Roman Church resided here for more than six decades.  The Pope’s Palace is one of the largest and most important Gothic structures in Europe, which is the crowning jewel of this walled city.

It is a wonderful starting point for a trip to the Provence–Alpes–Côte d’Azur region since it is is the first major stop along the high speed train line from Paris.  Perfectly located at the doorway to Provence, this timeless city will give you a feel for traditional France.
